Seen. Felt. Uplifted.
Guiding others in group fitness - cycling or otherwise - with individualized strategies, best practices, and wisdom I was not provided by leaders in the space as I started in NYC in 2007.
(Mission Statement)
A Wild Ride
I spent 15 formative years in NYC where I earned an undergraduate degree in theater, was a dancer, worked in high-profile hospitality, DJ’d off my laptop decks in Brooklyn… and was a reluctant gym-goer who found myself on a bike at an indoor cycling studio in 2007.
After spending four years as a consumer of the pre-ClassPass, NYC boutique fitness craze for four years, I made my way into SoulCycle’s (then) 9-month-long instructor training and followed that up by becoming certified and learning how to effectively ride an indoor bike from Schwinn. I became a teacher of 15-20 classes/week in NYC for the next three years, finding a unique balance of programming and vision that lives somewhere between the accessible exercise of Schwinn and the unmatched vibes of SoulCycle.
In January 2014, I answered a Craigslist-NYC ad (yes, really!) to move to Singapore for a few months to build programming and train instructors for the first cycle studio in Southeast Asia.
Since then, I've relocated and worked with early adopters, bringing studio indoor cycling culture to countries and cities where it did not yet exist, all over the world.
My Work Now
I approach advising boutique fitness studios like the hospitality brands they are.
Instead of selling delicious and well-crafted food and beverages delivered by staff who go out of their way to make clients feel welcome, we as boutique fitness studio leaders sell exceptional movement classes led by well-trained instructors and seamless hospitality experiences led by our support staff.
I mentioned my early-career work in hospitality; My first job out of university, I worked in 4-star Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s office and on the opening of Spice Market in the Meatpacking District in NYC.The hospitality tools I learned then, I use now in the boutique fitness industry.
I help studio founders wanting better staff retention (money saved), better client retention (money earned), waitlisted-rooms, more locations opened, hospitable client journeys with customized-to-them advisory.
I help indoor cycling instructors seeking the best foundation possible for a career on the bike with no-nonsense, elevated mentoring tapping-into my years in NYC and building cycle programs at boutiques all over the world since 2014.
If we strip-down all the extra “stuff”...is the class challenging but attainable? Are we allowing the music to guide us? And do we have anything to say on the mic that is authentic and real?
I believe no two studios are the same, even if they have similar goals and audiences…and live by that whether I’m leading a cycling workshop or customizing a studio’s employee handbook.
Non-traditional-fitness spaces who deliver are my north star.
Format-aside, if you want to build something exceptional, that’s exactly what I’m here for.
Off The Bike
After years of working with cycling studios, I wanted to help all-format group fitness coaches wanting to fill their rooms, to enhance a key piece of their personal brand and make more income/impact now and over a long career. This expanded vision led me first to launch Boutique Fitness Talks, and later to explore other ways to help studios and industry leaders.
After years of hearing both preventable voice damage and inauthentic copies of Insta-famous instructors on mics in studios worldwide, I connected with Ashley FitzSimmons-Olsen, M.S., CCC-SLP. Together we created PEP For FitPros, where we Preserve, Enhance & Protect (PEP) coaches voices with voice performance and hygiene tools. Our course material is available to purchase for remote learning via video, and our 3 hour workshop is hosted at studios, in-person.
Ashley and I have also run two IRB-approved studies and co-authored two academic papers on the fitness coach and their voice.
Let’s Talk
I can’t wait to meet you and cheer you on.
