Had you told me back in 2007, when I was dragged to my first class @ SoulCycle Rear Lobby, in a sign-free building in NYC…that I would work with entrepreneurs opening cycling studios around the world many times over…I would have laughed at you…

Who I Am

My first job out of university, I worked in the office of 4-star Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten & aided the opening of Spice Market, Meatpacking District. The hospitality tools I learned then, I use now in the boutique fitness industry.

In my pre-fitness life, I was a dancer, actor and writer. I worked freelance in the music industry & would DJ off my laptop decks in bars in Brooklyn for fun.

Had you told me back in 2007, when I was dragged to my first class in the Rear Lobby of SoulCycle, in a sign-free building in NYC…that I would work with entrepreneurs opening cycling studios around the world many times over…I would have laughed at you…

I had a front-row seat to the NYC boutique fitness craze for 4 years as a consumer before becoming an instructor.

These were the days of Rate Your Burn (iykyk!), Classtivity before it became ClassPass & back when a noteworthy studio ‘banned’ other instructors from paying to attend their classes.

In 2011 during the Equinox acquisition, I completed SoulCycle’s (then) 9-month-long instructor training program. After, I learned how to properly ride an indoor bike + was certified twice-over from Schwinn & taught 15 to 20 classes a week.in NYC.

In January 2014, I answered a Craigslist-NYC ad (yes, really!) to come to Singapore for a few months to build programming & train instructors for the first studio in Southeast Asia.

Since 2014, I have relocated or lived out of a suitcase, working with early adopters to begin studio indoor cycling culture in countries & cities where it did not previously exist & with established studios wanting to go from good experience to unmissable.

One of my proudest moments? 60% of the first group of instructors I trained in 2014, went onto invest into or co-found their own boutique fitness studios in multiple modalities, not only cycle.

I believe mentorship in its truest sense, is wanting your students to one day be better than you & pass along what they’ve learned to the next generation.

In Berlin in 2017, I was at dinner with 4 Europe-based boutique cycling studio owners & asked if they would ever be interested in attending a purposefully-small, boutique-focused event with relevant speakers and topics, connecting authentically and learning with their colleagues. It was a resounding yes and in May 2018, we had our first Boutique Fitness Talks event.

In early 2020, I knew I wanted to serve instructors of ALL formats, with solid continuing education. I connected with my co-founder, Ashley FitzSimmons-Olsen, M.S., CCC-SLP & we created PEP For FitPros ; providing solutions for all-format group fitness instructors and personal trainers seeking to make income now and later over a long career. We seek to preserve, enhance and protect (PEP) instructors’ voices as better, more commanding performers and as professional voice users. We completed 1 IRB-approved study polling fitness instructors about their voices & published an academic paper on our findings. We then completed an IRB-approved qualitative study to go deeper & will publish later in 2025. Ashley & our academic collaborator have spoken at voice conferences on the rate of preventable dysphonia (voice damage) which plagues the fitness industry.
